Photographs of the German Emperor Wilhelm II. In May 1920, the German ex-Kaiser Wilhelm II moved to Huis Doorn, The Netherlands, to spend his remaining life in exile until 1941. He took 64 train wagons of furniture with him. These contents contained thousands of photos, taken between 1845 and 1919. In Doorn, his collection was added with photos taken in his exile and photos that were sent to him as gifts. After his death most of these photos remained in Huis Doorn, which was opened as a museum not much later. For a long time, the photographs were in boxes and albums, unknown to the public and, for the most part, not even to the museum staff. It was only when the inventory was started in the late 1990s that it became clear that this is a very unique collection, consisting of more than 13,000 photographs. The photos of the German Emperor Wilhelm II show an overview of this special collection. The photos tell the story of the life of a 19th century monarch: how he lived, worked and traveled. During World War I he traveled to his troops and eventually spend his life in exile in Doorn. Finally, the photographs, which cover nearly a century, provide a unique insight into the development of photography, with a wide variety of techniques and examples of rare historical photographic processes.
