Carl Eduard was a grandson of Queen Victoria and in 1905 Regent in Coburg. In 1927 he invited Adolf Hitler to a funeral for Houston Stuart Chamberlain to Coburg. Thanks to Carl Eduard's influence Coburg became the first Nazi-ruled city in Germany. For the general election in 1932, the Duke issued a call to vote for Hitler. As representative of the "Third Reich" and his international connections he had the power to make Nazism acceptable, and later denied as president of the German Red Cross the horrors of the concentrioncamps. The support for Nazism by German and European aristocracy has long been underestimated.
