Lundberg/Svanholm - Laurits Tuxen, the Court paintings

Lundberg/Svanholm - Laurits Tuxen, the Court paintings
The Danish artist Laurits Tuxen was a phenomenally talented artist, and thanks to his skill for both painting and diplomacy, he became court painter to all of Europe throughout the 19th century. He also worked in Great Britain, creating a number of portraits of Queen Victoria and her family. Now the story behind Tuxen’s wonderful works is told in this book Laurits Tuxen: The Court Paintings. The authors present the entire life and oeuvre of Laurits Tuxen (1853-1927), paying special attention to the more than 40 years he spent as one of the leading court painters of the western world. He painted royal families from all over Europe, but especially portrayed the Danish and British royalties, along with coronations and weddings in the families of the Russian czars. This book offers the first complete presentation of Tuxen’s royal portraits and paintings and shows both full and detailed views of familiar and by now iconic works of art such as the 1887 group portrait of Queen Victoria and her family at Windsor Castle. The British Queen also selected Tuxen to depict great royal events such as the wedding of the Duke of York and Princess Mary of Teck in 1893, and he created several beautiful paintings on the occasion of Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee in 1897. Laurits Tuxen: The Court Paintings is a must for all art lovers and fans of the European royal families. The book takes us one step closer to the great painter and his relations with the royals of Europe, not least those of Great Britain. The book will be published on November 21st, on the 92nd anniversary of Tuxen’s death. The authors are art historians Mr. Thyge Christian Fønss-Lundberg and Mrs. Lise Svanholm, two of Denmark’s leading authorities in the field. Thyge Christian Fønss-Lundberg is the author of a number of books and has curated many art exhibitions. Lise Svanholm’s focus as an art historian is on the Skagen painters, one of Denmark’s most beloved artist groups, to which Tuxen famously belonged. She has written several books and curated a number of exhibitions and gives popular talks and lectures on art. These royal paintings are a must for all art and royal history lovers. Hardback edition, 256 pages, fully illustrated, in English.
