Aston/Kiste, vd - HRH Duke of Connaught and Strathearn
Arthur, Duke of Connaught and Strathearn, the seventh of nine children of Queen Victoria and Albert, Prince Consort, was born in 1850 and died in 1942. His mother's favourite son, as she freely admitted on several occasions, he served for forty years in the British army, and was Governor General of Canada from 1911 to 1916. Married to Princess Louise Margaret of Prussia, who predeceased him, their elder daughter Princess Margaret became Crown Princess of Sweden, and thus grandmother of Carl XVI Gustav, King of Sweden. Aston's biography, published in 1929, thirteen years before the Duke's death, was for over sixty years the only study of him ever written. Although inevitably uncritical, and despite being written with the assistance of 'Evelyn Graham', who was later unmasked as a notorious confidence trickster, it remains an useful and comprehensive if discreet account of much of his public and family life and career at home and abroad.
