Denmark is Europe's oldest monarchy and since the Renaissance, when portraiture was developed, the Danish monarchs have been presented in a variety of art forms. Art historian Thyge Christian Fønss-Lundberg talks about portraiture and the many symbols from Christian I to Crown Prince Frederik.
This book gives examples of parade and equestrian portraits, Danish royal portraits on coffee sets, coins and woodcuts. There are works by Hans Holbein, Andy Warhol, Jens Juel and Thomas Kluge, from unknown book printers to experienced court painters.
The portraits have found their place in the large halls of castles and palaces, they hung on town squares, in classrooms and private homes, they have been pasted on by letters or shared on social media. In short: here are 500 years of royal Danish portraits!
