Juliana's Century

Juliana\'s Century
The Netherlands as we know it today arose under Queen Juliana. Her reign (1948-1980) was dominated by recovery, change and renewal. From reconstruction to new housing estates, the independence of Indonesia and Suriname, the Cold War, the arrival of large groups of guest workers, the pill and divorces, squatters and provos — a progressive time under the leadership of a progressive woman: Queen Juliana. Juliana was incredibly popular because of her supposed simplicity and humanity. She was also known for her modern ideas. "I've always been progressive," the old queen said in an interview in 1987. “I do my best throughout my life not to become old-fashioned.” That also translated into her private life. In 1937 Juliana married the fashionable Bernhard. The couple emphatically broke with the social conventions of the royal milieu. She also chooses her own path as a mother: in the turbulent sixties, the daughters unintentionally defy authority and authority with their partner choices. All four daughters marry out of love. The century of Juliana connects land and queen. When such diverse themes as the death penalty, women's right to self-determination and decolonization entered the social discourse, it was Juliana who took the position. Without Juliana, the Netherlands we know today would have looked very different. exhibitioncatalogue of De Nieuwe Kerk Amsterdam.
