The front cover of this book is one of Ludwig Angerer's most famous photographs from 1862. Emperor Franz Joseph I (second from right) with his brothers Karl Ludwig, Ludwig Viktor and Ferdinand Maximilian (from left to right). Ludwig Angerer (1827-1879) was the first Viennese photographer to be awarded the title of "Court Photographer" by Emperor Franz Joseph. He started as a photographer in the Balkans in 1854 and opened his first studio in Vienna's Theresianumgasse in 1858. Ludwig Angerer also took the first known photograph of the Austrian Emperor Franz Joseph and the only surviving photograph of the Austrian Imperial Couple together in front of the camera popped up. Ludwig Angerer has iconic photographs of Empress Elisabeth and extensive photographic documentation of Austrian nobility and Viennese society in the 1860s. The group photos became his special trademark. At the time, his studio was considered the most fashionable and elegant in Vienna and was frequented by the Austrian nobility as well as by foreign courts. After his early death it was successfully continued by his brother Viktor Angerer. The author Michael Pfundner has combined the very large collection of Angerer's photographs, which are kept in the photographic archive of the Austrian National Library, with numerous other archives and collections.
