The Golden Carriage

The Golden Carriage
The "Golden Carriage" is ready to hit the road again after five years of restoration. Will she remain the eye-catcher on the Dutch opening of Parliament and during inaugurations and Royal weddings? Or does it actually belong in a museum? More and more Dutch people are offended by the paintings on the coach, which refer to the colonial past. Others cherish the riding fairytale. This richly illustrated book tells important and surprising stories about the Golden Coach in an accessible way. How did it actually originate, what did they want to achieve with it? How has it been used since then? Which symbolism exactly has been incorporated? And why has it been the subject of discussion and protest since the first idea in 1896? Renowned authors and young talents are addressing these and other issues. This book will accompany the exhibition De Gouden Koets (Amsterdam Museum, on display from Friday 18 June to Sunday 27 February 2022), where the carriage will be on display for the first time since its restoration. The exhibition highlights diverse perspectives on the carriage to advance the debate about this controversial driving heritage. Thirteen contemporary artists show work in the exhibition that ties in with the theme of the carriage. Prior to and during the duration of the exhibition, the museum also travels with a mobile research installation along all provincial capitals, to share information about the carriage and to map out which visions of the Golden Coach are alive in the Netherlands. Hardback edition, in English, 100 illustrations, 160 pages, size 22x24xm.
